As resolution of the first meeting of Dialogo Brasil (a Brazilian internet discussion group), it was proposed the creation of an association aiming to give assistance to the Brazilian Community in the UK. The idea was to have an association that would provide assistance and would promote integration between the Brazilian community and the English society.
Since February 9th 2009, a voluntary group of Brazilians have worked for that idea to become a reality. Namely ABRAS - Associação Brasileira no Reino Unido, ( a Brazilian Association in the United Kingdom). At the first meeting the participants put together the project, and it started becoming reality on 6 th June 2006 when it was registered at Companies House as a Non-profit making limited company.
ABRAS opened its doors in 24th. July 2006. The first address was 1st Floor, 96 Tubbs Road, in North West London. Within 3 months of this opening, ABRAS had already gained more than 200 members. Getting bigger and bigger, it moved to a larger building at 59 Station Road.
Currently ABRAS is a reference not only for the Brazilian community, but for the whole of the Portuguese Speaking community in the UK. It has got more than 5,500 members registered and offers many services assisting people to become integrated in the UK, and face the challenge of living as an immigrant.
